A Cherokee County, South Carolina, truck stop was evacuated for a “significant” HAZMAT response early Wednesday morning.
According to Cherokee County Emergency Management (CCEMS), “an unrestrained barrel caused a significant hazmat response to the Love’s Truck Stop just off exit 104 in Cherokee County around midnight last night.”

The truck stop and “many trucks in the parking lot” were evacuated.
No injuries were reported.

Multiple agencies responded to the incident, including the South Carolina Highway Patrol, the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office, Thorne Ambulance, Blacksburg, CKC, Buffalo and Grover fire departments as well as a full Hazmat response from Spartanburg County.

“Incidents like this are very manpower intensive: 13 hazmat techs for entry, 8+for DECON, 8 supervisory personnel, 10-15 assigned to fire protection due to a significant threat of auto ignition and 6 EMS personnel. Huge thank you to everyone that helped and worked together to mitigate this incident,” said CCEMS.
CCEMS handed over the scene to a contractor at 6:30 a.m.
