A wreck involving a semi truck, a box truck, and a jeep left a motorist seriously injured, and a trucker trapped in his rig Wednesday after the Jeep swerved into the path of the oncoming semi truck.
The accident happened on May 9th at approximately 12:25 p.m. near Pine Valley, New York.
According to WENY News, the Jeep began swerving as it traveled along Watkins Road, prompting a box truck driver traveling behind it to call the police.
“He was swerving back and forth, back and forth. He was driving up the shoulder of the road and at that point I called 911 and told them what was going on,” said box truck driver David Stone.
“As soon as I hung up the phone he crossed into the northbound lane and hit the Pepsi [tractor trailer], and when he hit the Pepsi guy he bounced back into my lane and then he hit me,” Stone continued.
The force of the impact sent the Pepsi semi truck veering off road before crashing into a nearby house, trapping the driver inside the wrecked cab.
“I hopped out of the truck, the first thing I did was get on my phone and call 911 again and I saw the driver of the Jeep in not very good condition,” said Stone.
The unnamed motorist was then transported to a nearby hospital while crews spent around an hour rescuing the unidentified trucker from the wreckage.
“The tractor trailer continued off the highway and into a house. It was apparently unoccupied at the time. It took some time to extricate the driver from the cab of the tractor trailer but he is apparently uninjured. Currently under investigation,” said New York State Police Captain George Delnagro.
Watkins Road was shut down until about 5:45 p.m., when the Pepsi truck was towed form the house and the damaged part of the house, torn down.
The incident is still under investigation and it is not yet clear why the motorist began driving erratically.
