A tractor trailer parked outside a hotel was broken into Tuesday night as the truck driver slept.
The incident happened in Fairview Heights, Illinois on the evening of May 29th at the Drury Inn at Route 159 and Interstate 64.
The unnamed truck driver says he was hauling goods for Casey’s General Store in a Casey’s General Store trailer when he stopped at the Drury Inn for the night. When he returned to his semi truck Wednesday morning, he noticed that the lock on his trailer had been broken and that the items inside were moved around, as if someone had been looking for something in a hurry.
The trucker says that the goods inside the trailer include things like snacks, beverages, and cigarettes, but that he wasn’t sure exactly what was taken, as the trailer was left a mess.
However, he did say that he thinks he knows what the thieves were looking for – cigarettes.
Just two weeks ago at another Drury Inn, this time in O’Fallon, the same thing happened – the driver’s trailer was broken into as he slept, only that time the thief took mostly cigarettes, leading the trucker to believe that’s what they were after this second time.
The similarities in the crimes have left officials wondering if someone is specifically targeting Casey’s General Store tractor trailers, reported Fox 2 Now.
Officials have not yet released the quantity of value of the items stolen.
Anyone with information regarding the crime is urged to call the Fairview Heights Police Department at (618) 489-2100.
