A trucker is lucky to be alive after police say he failed to negotiate a curve, sending his rig crashing through a barrier wall before plunging 60 feet to the ground below.
The accident happened on Sunday, June 24th at around 4:00 p.m. in Kansas City, Kansas.
According to The Kansas City Star, the semi truck was traveling along eastbound Interstate 670 near Interstate 70 between South Seventh Street and the Kansas River when police say he failed to negotiate a curve, sending him crashing over the side of the overpass and crashing 60 feet to the ground below.
The force of the impact ruptured the trailer and seriously damaged the cab of the tractor, strewing the big rig’s load of groceries across the ground.
“He just went straight over,” said Bill Newcamp, a construction worker waiting in the area at the time of the accident.
“I went over to make sure he was okay. He seemed coherent and functional and kept trying to get out of the truck…. Troopers say he was bleeding out of his ear and from his head and said they didn’t know if he was going to make it. I hope he does,” Newcamp said.
“It’s a miracle he’s alive.”
Crews then extracted the trucker from the mangled cab and transported him to a nearby hospital.
The name of the truck driver has not been released but he is currently listed in serious condition. The details of his injuries have not been released.
