The truck driver who crashed through a median, killing himself and two other drivers in Arkansas earlier this week was on his first drive with a new company at the time of the accident.

The accident happened on Tuesday, April 24th in Carlisle, Arkansas and killed three – the driver who crossed the median, 64-year-old Jerry Stice, 47-year-old FedEx driver Jesus Escareno, and Escareno’s co driver, 55-year-old Mark Lynch.

During the wreck, Stice’s semi truck somehow managed to cross through the 60 foot median and wire cable fence, allowing it to strike the FedEx truck, leaving officials wondering why the cable barrier and large median failed.

“It acts like a spider web. So, a vehicle drives into the cables, get caught up in the cables… and it just holds that vehicle there until we can basically cut it loose,” said Danny Straessle with the Arkansas Department of Transportation.

In addition to the cable barrier failure, Stice was a brand new employee of Larry Williams Trucking, but had “many years” of prior experience, and that run was his first drive with the company.

“Something went terribly wrong yesterday and we’re going to find out what it was,” Straessle said.

“It’s a heavy heart. It’s a heavy heart out here. It’s almost like family out here,” said one trucker to Fox 16 News.
