35 barrels of fish were spilled across a Maine highway late last week, creating hours of smelly backups.

The incident occurred on Thursday, August 16th in Newcastle, Maine.

According to the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office, the 41-year-old truck driver says that he was traveling along Route 1 when he swerved into the breakdown lane to avoid a motorist stopped in traffic. As he swerved he lost control of the truck, causing it to overturn, spilling 35 barrels of bait fish across the road.

The unnamed truck driver sustained minor injuries in the incident and was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment but no other injuries were reported.

Crews worked for more than three hours to clear the fish from the roadway, blocking traffic on Route 1 “at the height of tourist season,” but the incident has since been cleared, reported Fox 11 Online.

Police say that driver inattention and speed were key factors in the incident, but did not disclose what citations, if any, were issued to the truck driver.
