A man was arrested in North Carolina on Tuesday after hijacking a semi truck and engaging police in a 16 hour standoff.

The incident happened on April 9th at the Enviva plant warehouse in Garysburg, North Carolina.

According to WECT 6 News, late Monday night 30-year-old suspect, Kylen Padgett Jr., forced his way into the cab of a stopped semi truck and demanded the unidentified truck driver to take him to the Enviva manufacturing facility. The truck driver obliged, but refused to leave the rig once they arrived, so Padgett left the truck and entered the facility’s warehouse, where he climbed a large pole up to the rafters of the building. Once among the rafters, Padgett engaged in a 16 hour standoff with police before eventually falling to the ground, where he was arrested.

Luckily, the truck driver was not hurt in the incident.

“In this case, a human being has to, at some point, come down,” Northhampton County Sheriff Jack Smith said in regards to the unusual circumstances.

“It may take a couple of days, but we weren’t going to risk anybody being killed or injured to get him down when we had time on our side,” he continued.

Padgett was taken to the hospital for treatment of minor injuries sustained in the fall but has since been transferred to the Northhampton detention center, where he is being held on $326,000 bond. He faces charges of kidnapping, resisting arrest, and probation violations.

According to the Department of Public Safety, Padgett has previous charges, such as larceny, drug use, and possession of stolen goods, reaching as far back as 2003. Padgett has also been featured on the Discovery Channel show “I (Almost) Got Away With It,” highlighting a crime spree committed by Padgett back in 2007.
