Confusion over the contents of a semi tanker truck set aflame after being struck by a motorist nearly prompted an evacuation in Milwaukee on Wednesday morning.

The crash happened on July 18th at approximately 3:00 a.m. in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

According to Fox 6 Now News, a semi tanker truck involved in a construction site on northbound Interstate 43 near the Marquette Interchange was struck by a motorist, starting a fire that burned through the semi truck and the sedan as well as prompting concern for the material inside the tanker, which was initially described as “dangerous, flammable,” and “very hazardous.”

Hazmat crews were on their way and officials had already began working on an evacuation plan for people in the area when the construction site foreman realized that a different tanker had been struck than he had initially thought and that the burning tanker was only hauling a road primer – a material considerably less dangerous and flammable than crews were originally told.

Upon the clarification about the contents of the trailer, fire fighters were able to enter the scene and quench the fire, though both the big rig and the car were a total loss.

No one was hurt in the accident, but Interstate 43 north at National Avenue was completely shut down for around six hours as crews worked to clear the wreckage. I-43 was reopened at around 9:00 a.m. that morning.

Information regarding any citations issued to the motorist responsible for the wreck and subsequent fire has not been released.
