55 illegal immigrants were discovered in the back of a semi truck in temperatures reaching around 100 degrees.
The people were discovered on Wednesday, September 5th at the Border Patrol checkpoint in Laredo, Texas.
According to News 4 San Antonio, during inspection, a canine alerted to the possible presence of narcotics or concealed humans, prompting further inspection of the big rig. Upon inspection, 55 illegal immigrants were discovered inside the trailer, which had reached temperatures of around 100 degrees.
The 55 people found were sweating inside the trailer with limited airflow, but were all found in stable condition.
The immigrants hail from Mexico, Guatemala, Brazil, Honduras, and Nicaragua.
The truck driver, who was found to be a US citizen, was promptly arrested and his tractor trailer, seized.
“The United States Border Patrol not only protects the nation’s borders, but also ensures those who cross into the United States illegally are treated humanely,” said Laredo Sector Acting Chief Patrol Agent Jason D. Owens.
“We will continue in the disruption and deterrence of any careless tactics utilized by smugglers.”
