A truck driver has been hospitalized after his rig went off an overpass and crashed into the construction area below.
It happened on Tuesday, May 9th around 5:30 am in southern Allen County, Indiana on Interstate 69.
According to WANE.com, the truck was driving northbound on I-69 when the rig apparently went off the road, crashing into the construction zone beneath the overpass, where concrete supports for a new bridge were being built.
The northbound lanes of I-69 were closed at the 293 mile marker until 11 a.m.
No damage to the functioning bridge was found, but the extent of the damage done to the bridge under construction has yet to be determined.
“We are still assessing those damages and determining how to move forward with that project,” said INDOT Spokesperson Nichole Hacha-Thomas
WANE.com also reported that “Homeland security officials” were brought in to clean and remove fluids spilled from the vehicle.
The truck driver was in critical condition and was brought to a hospital where, as of yesterday afternoon, he remained in a critical state.
Details regarding the cause of the crash are still unknown, but INDOT urges motorists to exercise caution in zones of construction.
