The Wyoming Highway Patrol (WHP) said that a truck driver was lucky to walk away from a “close call crash” on I-80 on Monday.
WHP responded to the crash at 4:20 a.m. on October 6 at the Lone Tree/Tree-in-the-Rock point of interest on I-80 at mile marker 332.
“The investigating trooper determined the driver veered to the left just after the eastbound exit lane for the landmark, which sits in the median between the east and westbound lanes of travel. The driver’s tractor semi-trailer struck an embankment, became airborne, crashed through the landmark’s west fence and travelled between the actual tree and the landmark’s sign. The tractor semi-trailer then crossed several lanes of westbound traffic, coming to rest in the north borrow ditch after taking out a section of the right-of-way fence,” WHP said.
Troopers noted that thick fog and slick roads caused by rain were present at the time of the crash.
The truck driver sustained only minor injuries and refused medical attention.
WHP cited the truck driver for Driving too Fast for Conditions and No Seat Belt.
The semi truck was placed out-of-service for damage sustained in the crash.
