Swift Joins ‘Trucking Alliance’ – A Group That Supports ELDs, Speed Limiters, And Self-Driving Trucks

Trucking mega-carrier Swift Transportation has joined the Alliance for Driver Safety & Security, also known as the Trucking Alliance.

The Trucking Alliance calls themselves “Freight Transportation’s Safety Advocate,” and is an organization compromised of several large transportation companies that have consistently pushed for stricter regulations.

Some of the members of the alliance include: JB Hunt Transport Services, KLLM Transport Services, Maverick USA, Knight Transportation, and US Xpress.

Their newest member, Phoenix-based Swift Transportation, announced their entry into the organization on March 14th.

“The Trucking Alliance is advancing safety reforms that we support,” said Swift’s president, Richard Stocking. “And we believe the Alliance’s operating principles are setting a new safety standard for our industry.”

According to the Trucking Alliance’s website, some of their chief accomplishments are fighting for and/or helping to pass the following legislation.

•Require electronic logging devices (ELDs) in all commercial trucks.
•Create a national drug and alcohol database.
•Recognize hair testing as a viable option in assessing commercial truck driver job applicants.
•Require speed limiters on trucks to reduce excessive speed.
•Increase the minimum insurance requirement for trucking companies to operate on U.S. highways.
•Support user based fees and taxes to repair roads and bridges.

In addition, the Trucking Alliance also stated their support for the development of autonomous (self-driving) commercial vehicles.

The organization “supports the development of advanced vehicle technologies that enable commercial drivers to utilize highly automated driving systems, enhancing their safety and security,” they said in a February press release.

Maverick USA CEO and president of the Trucking Alliance, Steve Williams, called Swift “one of the best in the business” and is grateful for their decision to join the organization.

“It’s gratifying that Swift will be part of the Trucking Alliance going forward, as we work to lower the number of truck accidents and improve highway safety, for our drivers and the general public,” Williams added.
