Truck Driver Initially Blamed For Fatal Pileup But Police Investigation Proves Otherwise

A five vehicle crash killed one woman and left another injured on Monday morning near the McCarran International Airport in Las Vegas. Early media reports indicated that a semi truck was to blame for the crash, after it failed to stop at a red light.

After an investigation, however, Las Vegas Police say that the truck driver had no part in causing the accident and that it was actually caused by a Honda Pilot, which was in front of the semi truck.

The driver of the Honda Pilot, Angela Bashay, initially placed blame on the semi truck, saying that it hit her from behind. She even called for the truck driver to turn himself in, “I just hope that he would come forward and for the families of the others involved just to take responsibility for it.” she said.

Police reviewed surveillance footage of the intersection and determined that her statements were inaccurate, and that the wreck was caused by Bashay’s 2011 Honda Pilot. Police say she failed to slow down for traffic at the intersection and crashed into the back of a Nissan Altima, which was stopped at a red light.

According to the Washington Times, Sgt. Richard Strader said that the semi truck was driving behind the Honda Pilot, “which could have led witnesses to believe it caused the accident”.

After hitting the Nissan Altima, the Honda Pilot lost control and hit several other cars in the intersection.

The driver of the Altima was killed in the crash. The driver of the Honda Pilot is expected to face criminal charges.
