Drivers Stranded On Interstate 80 After Massive Mudslides Shut Down Highway

Major mudslides have closed a stretch of Interstate 80 in Truckee, California, near Donner Lake. The mudslides occurred shortly after 6 p.m. (PST) on Sunday evening.

Drivers are currently stuck on the highway in Truckee, with no detour or estimated re-opening time according to the California Highway Patrol.

At 6:40 PM (PST), CHP announced that the westbound lanes of I-80 in Truckee were closed.

An hour later, the highway was closed in both directions due to worsening conditions and downed power lines.

Traffic Alert:

I-80 is now closed in both directions between Truckee and Donner Summit.

Truck driver Chad Peterson posted this image of stopped traffic on Facebook.

CHP estimated that it would take “several hours” before the area is cleared and traffic begins moving again.
