This footage, taken from an overpass on Highway 401 in Ontario, Canada, shows part of a massive pileup that took place on Saturday, January 7th.
In total, approximately 100 vehicles were involved in the pileup, which happened just east of Toronto.
According to Clarington Fire Chief Gord Weir, lane closures on both sides of the highway and white out conditions played a factor in the crash.
“I’ve never seen anything like it,” says local resident Ryan Gagnon, who survived the crash.
“I saw the death in front of me. I thought, ‘Okay I’m not going to make it,'” another driver told CTV News. “It’s going to be really bad and I’m not going to die in a nice way, it’s going to be awful.”
Several people were injured and taken to local hospital. But amazingly, no one was killed in the pileup.
All lanes of the highway were closed for more than 9 hours before finally reopening on Sunday morning.
