Several large truck makers have started to develop self-driving rigs in order to replace drivers allow drivers to focus on other tasks while on the road.
Although there are several self-driving passenger vehicles on the road today, it doesn’t seem like the technology is quite ready to be implemented in big rigs. This footage of a self-driving Tesla Model S crashing into a highway barrier on the Sam Rayburn Tollway near Dallas, Texas, is a prime example.
According to the car’s owner, who posted his story on Reddit.com, “Autopilot was on [it] didn’t give me a warning. It misread the road and hit the barrier. After the airbags deployed there was a bunch of smoke and my car rolled to a grinding stop. Thankfully no one was hurt and I walked away with only bruises.”
Thankfully no one was hurt in the incident. However, a fully loaded, self-driving tractor trailer in the same situation may not have ended so peacefully.
