A trucker who left his rig and approached a motorist on a Florida highway was shot and killed on Friday morning.

The incident occurred on December 1st, at approximately 9:30 a.m. in Miami-Dade County, Florida.

According to police, the truck driver left his rig and approached the motorist on the southbound Palmetto Expressway exit ramp to Northwest 25th street. The driver was allegedly armed with a knife as he approached the motorist.

As the trucker walked towards the vehicle, the motorist exited his car and an altercation ensued. During the altercation, the motorist produced a firearm and shot the driver. The trucker died of his injuries at the scene.

The reason for the confrontation between the trucker and the motorist are still unclear, however it is believed to be a case of road rage.

“The driver of the tractor trailer did exit the vehicle and walk toward a black Nissan,” explained Miami-Dade police spokesman Alvaro Zabaleta to CBS Miami.

“The driver of the Nissan got out… There was a physical confrontation between both of them. We’re being told the driver of the tractor trailer was armed with a knife during the confrontation and that’s when the driver of Nissan produced a firearm and shot the victim in this case,” he continued.

The Nissan driver stayed at the scene and has been taken in for questioning as officials investigate what exactly happened that caused the trucker to exit his semi truck.

“There is no need for confrontations, avoid traffic confrontations as much as you can,” said Florida Highway Patrol spokesman Joe Sanchez.

“If someone blows a horn at you, ignore it, continue. These incidents at times result in people getting injured and at times, people even losing their lives.”

The identities of the drivers have not been released.

As of 12:30 p.m., the Northwest 25th street exit on southbound Palmetto Expressway remains closed.
