A man was arrested earlier today after stealing a flatbed truck that he didn’t know how to drive.
It happened at around 4:30 a.m. on June 15th in Jefferson County, Alabama.
According to AL.com, Jefferson County Sheriff Deputies originally responded to a call regarding a suspicious vehicle abandoned in the road with its lights still on. While inspecting the suspicious car, the deputies were informed that a flatbed delivery truck had just been stolen nearby.
The officers saw the stolen Kenworth T300 on Huffman Road and tried to pull it over, but the driver refused to stop.
The chase continued onto I-59, where the driver did not exceed 30 mph, apparently due to his inability to change gears.
“The pursuit could have gotten all the way up to 35 mph,” joked Chief Deputy Randy Christian afterward.
The engine of the stolen Kenworth eventually seized, and the truck came to a stop near Bush Boulevard, where the driver, 29-year-old Randy Dewayne Vert, was arrested.
“Thank God he couldn’t find second gear,” added Christian.
Vert was jailed on bonds totaling $5,900 and was charged with attempting to elude, first-degree theft of property, reckless endangerment, and resisting arrest.
