A tractor trailer got wedged beneath a bridge near Niagara falls early Wednesday morning after ignoring the posted bridge clearance sign.
It happened on August 16th at approximately 8:40 a.m. at the Grand Island bridge along the Niagara Scenic Parkway in Niagara Falls, New York.
According to WIVB, the driver failed to obey height clearance signs and tried to squeeze beneath the Grand Island bridge, wedging the trailer underneath the ceiling of the bridge. The impact caused the trailer to buckle, nearly splitting it in half.
The driver, a 49-year-old man who refused to be named, said that he was not observing the signs and was instead following the direction of his GPS.
The height of bridge is listed as 11’8″ at its highest point, significantly shorter than the typical 13’6″ tractor trailer. Tractor trailers are also prohibited along the Niagara Scenic Parkway.
Only minor paint damage was sustained by the bridge.
The driver was cited for failing to obey a traffic control device and exceeding bridge clearance.
