Body cam footage of a truck driver falling from a 40 foot overpass while running from police was released over the weekend.

The incident occurred on December 5th at approximately 1 a.m. in Bellevue, Kentucky but the body cam footage of the incident was released on Friday, December 15th.

According to WLWT, 55-year-old Eugene Lydell was traveling the wrong way on Interstate 471 when he was stopped by police. During the stop, officers discovered Lydell had outstanding warrants, and attempted to place him under arrest.

Lydell resisted, struggling against the two officers before eventually “tripping over road debris” and falling off of the 40 foot overpass. Lydell then quickly got up and ran into the woods.

Police then sent in a K-9 unit to find the truck driver amongst the trees, but Lydell was able to get the dog in a choke hold before officers arrived. Lydell was immediately taken into custody and transported to a nearby hospital.

“I thought he was dead. When we were looking over the side …” said one of the responding officers.

“He, he was … I mean, he fell over and it was a flat smack right on his back. I don’t know how he’s still living,” the officer said.

Lydell was taken first to St. Elizabeth Hospital in Fort Thomas for his injuries, but was later taken to UC Medical Center to be treated. The specifics of his injuries are not clear, but he is expected to make a full recovery. He has since been cited with a misdemeanor resisting arrest charge.
