Auto insurance company Everquote has published a list of the most dangerous highways in America, based on the rate of fatalities.
The company used private data as well as public information from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration in order to rank the highways.
Topping the list was Interstate 4 in Central Florida.
Glenn Victor, of the Florida Safety Council, said he’s not surprised by the results. He blamed the dangerous conditions on distracted drivers, especially tourists who are not familiar with the area.
“What’s the first thing they do when they get off the plane? They rent a car that they’re not familiar with and they’re on their GPS, so they’re looking at the phone and their GPS which of course is a distraction while their driving,” he said.
According to the study, between 2010 and 2015 the highway had 1.41 fatalities per mile.
Interstate 45 in Texas ranked number 2 and Interstate 17 in Arizona ranked number three.
