A motorist crashed, head-on into a semi truck while texting and driving Monday afternoon.

It happened Monday, May 22nd at approximately 1 p.m. on Ridge Road in South Brunswick Township, New Jersey.

According to the South Brunswick Township Police Department, 33-year-old Pava Dama was driving westbound in his 2007 Volkswagen Jetta when he drove over the double yellow lines and struck a tractor trailer driving eastbound.

The impact damaged the 2008 Freightliner’s fuel tank, covering the roadway with diesel fuel.

The Volkswagen engine was ripped from the car and thrown 20 feet away as a result of the collision.

Neither 68-year-old Waldemar Borowski, driver of the Freightliner, nor Dama were seriously injured in the crash.

South Brunswick Township Police Chief Raymond Hayducka was on the scene.

“It is a miracle that neither driver was seriously injured or killed as a result of this driver texting,” Hayducka said.

Reports given by witnesses state that Dama was texting and swerving along the road directly before the crash.

“I am not sure what was so critical in a text message that would allow you to take your eyes off the road and hit a tractor trailer head-on,” Hayducka continued.

Dama was issued motor vehicle summonses for crossing a double yellow line, failure to maintain lane, careless driving, and use of a cellphone while operating a motor vehicle.

“This crash was entirely preventable,” concluded Hayducka.
