On Tuesday, the International Roadcheck began its first day of the 72-hour inspection period.

Law enforcement agencies in the U.S., Mexico, and Canada spent the past three days stopping and inspecting trucks, eliminating dangers by putting some out of service.

Some people speculate that since truckers know when the inspection period happens, they choose to stay off the roads by taking a “Roadcheck Vacation.”

News 9 reported that the “international crackdown on commercial trucking” had one attorney, Steve Laird, warning motorists about what he claims to be a country-wide dangerous time for drivers on roads.

Laird claimed that the highways are much more dangerous immediately following these roadchecks. He furthered that Friday could be a risky day to drive. The attorney said that this is when the worst offenders all get back on the roads to make up for the time they lost during their “vacation.”

“So, they’re driving distances that are illegal.  They are driving hours that are illegal,” he added.

Safety inspectors disagreed with the attorney’s warning and said they don’t believe many drivers purposely avoid the inspection event with a “Roadcheck Vacation.”
