After months of teasing the vehicle on social media, Tesla motors finally unveiled their all-electric class 8 semi truck.

The unveiling ceremony took place at the Tesla design studios in Hawthorne, California, and was live-streamed on the web.

According to the stats specified during the unveiling, the class 8 electric Tesla semi truck will have a range of 500 miles, and will take 30 minutes to charge back up with Tesla’s “megacharger” charging stations. The electric semi truck will also be able to get from 0 to 60 in 5 seconds while empty, and in 20 seconds fully loaded at its maximum total weight of 80,000 pounds, all while boasting at speed of 65 mph on a 5% grade.

The new electric truck will require no shifting, only 1 gear forward and 1 reverse, and comes with two semi-autonomous options- Autopilot and Convoy Mode, one of which can take over highway driving while a trucker is present, and the other syncs up Tesla semis using Autopilot and links them together, creating a convoy and improving communication between the rigs.

The new rig is also equipped with “nuclear explosion-proof glass” and other safety features such as automatic braking and lane tracking, making it the “safest, most comfortable truck ever,” according to Musk’s claims.

Musk believes this unveiling to be a “hardcore smackdown” to other, fossil fuel based forms of transportation.

According to ccording to CNBC, J.B. Hunt Transport Services and Walmart have already preordered “multiple” Tesla trucks.

The 2020 Tesla semi is not scheduled to go into production until the year 2019.
