A 16-year-old boy is behind bars after stealing an unmarked cop car and using it to pull over truck drivers and steal their money, all while posing as a police officer.
The incident happened on Sunday, December 17th at approximately 5:00 a.m. in North Brunswick, New Jersey.
According to the Courier Post, an unmarked police vehicle was parked at an officer’s home in New Brunswick when it was stolen out of the driveway by an unidentified 16-year-old boy. The teen then used the car to travel along the southbound New Jersey Turnpike, where he pulled over a truck driver, posing as an officer of the law, and demanded money from the trucker as a fine for speeding. The trucker refused to pay, and the teen left the scene, continuing on the New Jersey Turnpike.
About an hour later, the teen stopped a second trucker, still posing as a police officer, and stole an undisclosed amount of cash from the driver before speeding off and robbing a cab driver.
The police vehicle was discovered abandoned later that day, but two guns and several uniforms were missing from inside the vehicle.
The teen was identified via “forensic analysis of evidence recovered during the investigation,” and was arrested on Wednesday, December 20th. The missing guns were also uncovered at the time of the arrest.
The teen is currently being held in the Middlesex County Juvenile Detention Center, where he faces charges of burglary, robbery, and theft, as well as several weapons offenses.
