Last week, a trucker died after being shot on an Illinois highway. Now, a suspect has been charged in this apparent road rage incident.

The incident occurred at approximately 4:50 p.m. near Oak Brook, Illinois on April 21. The suspect and victim were both traveling eastbound on Interstate 88 at the time.

Now, a suspect is in custody. According to the Chicago Tribune, 34-year-old Anthony Tillmon of Lansing, Illinois, surrendered to police Tuesday. He faces first-degree murder charges and is being detained in lieu of a bail of $3 million.

The cause of the incident remains unclear. But witnesses said that a tow truck driver and Eduardo Munoz, the 43-year-old trucker involved in the incident, yelled and flailed their arms at each other for more than three miles before Munoz was ultimately shot.

Munoz safely stopped his truck, which DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin said likely prevented damage or injury to other drivers.  However, Munoz did not survive the incident.

Meanwhile, Berlin said that  the GPS and iPass transponder from Tillmon’s tow truck as well as video from a toll plaza all place it at the scene of the shooting.

Also, a search of the vehicle that Tillmon was driving revealed a 9 mm shell casing as well as a green vest, the same color vest that witnesses said the tow truck driver wore.  However, the weapon has not been found.

“We’ve been together for a long time. We were just talking, looking for rings, planning, finally getting at a point in our lives where we can enjoy ourselves, and this is what happens,” said Michele Salerno, Munoz’s fiancée. “We had a lot of plans.”

Tillmon is scheduled to be in court on May 22. He faces up to life in prison if convicted.
