A truck driver was killed after plowing into stopped traffic, leading to a pileup that involved three semi trucks and three cars on Friday evening

It happened on Interstate 70 in Clay County, Indiana, around 6:15 p.m.

According to the Tribune Star, traffic was slowed on westbound I-70  near the 26 mile marker on Friday evening due to a previous accident when a tractor trailer approached the backup. The driver failed to slow down in time and struck the back of another 18-wheeler, causing a pileup crash involving 3 tractor trailers and 3 cars.

The driver of the semi truck that caused the multi-vehicle crash died in the accident. Another driver was taken to a nearby hospital with minor injuries.

The highway was closed and traffic was diverted for hours as crews cleaned up the wreckage from 6 different vehicles.

“A lot of it is paying attention,” said Clay County Sheriff Sergeant Michael Heaton.

“You have to be prepared to stop on the interstate, watch your speed and how close you’re following to another vehicle,” Heaton added.

Police have been collecting dashcam footage from motorists who saw the massive crash and are using the video to gather details on the accident.

One of the dash cam clips, taken by a motorist directly behind the incident, was released by local police and can be seen below.
