A seventh-grade student was able to steer his school bus to safety during the bus driver’s medical emergency last week, all thanks to the driving lessons given to him by his truck driver uncle.

The incident happened on Thursday, February 1st at approximately 4:45 p.m. in La Grange, Texas.

According to the Fayette County Record, seventh grader Karson Vega was riding the school bus on Highway 71 near Kirtley on his way home when he noticed the bus driver acting strangely.

“He was going off in the ditch almost every turn, and then he started driving and swerving and stuff… missed a turn and went into ditch,” Karson explained.

“I asked him what he was doing, and he said he needed to go to the store. I said, ‘No, you need to take us home.’ Then he almost hit a few cars, and at that big bridge by McDonalds, he almost went off the side… that’s when I was like ‘No, I’m not dying,’ so I jerked the wheel and took the seat,” he continued.

“He wouldn’t take his feet off [the pedal] so I kicked them over a little, so I could get the brake and stuff and turn the flashers on and everything.”

Karson then sat on the drivers lap and drove the school bus for several miles until he could find a good place to pull over, all while Kyler Buzek, a sophomore, stayed with the younger kids in the back and called police on his cell phone.

Eventually, Karson pulled over near the Colorado River Bridge, put the bus in park, and extended the stop arm, handing the keys back to the police when officers arrived.

The details of the bus driver’s medical emergency have not been released, but the school Superintendent says that the driver is currently out of the hospital and recovering.

Karson says that this wasn’t his first time driving, and that his family lets him practice on their property in all kinds of vehicles.

“I wasn’t scared, I’m used to driving… My uncle let me drive his 18-wheeler, so it’s pretty much the same thing,” he said to WFLA News.

“He doesn’t normally ride the bus,” added Amber Vega, Karson’s mom.

“But last Thursday I couldn’t pick him up, so I told him to ride the bus. He wasn’t real happy about it, but I think he was on that bus for a reason,” she said.
