A boardwalk in New Jersey had to be taken apart and reconstructed after a truck driver took a wrong turn and followed his GPS onto the boardwalk.
It happened on Wednesday, September 20th, at approximately 5:30 a.m. in Atlantic City, New Jersey.
According to NJ, the CRST truck entered the boardwalk at Albany Avenue in Atlantic City and began driving along the walkway. After driving for nearly 3 miles and damaging at least 100 feet of guardrail, the truck driver attempted to turn off of the boardwalk and got stuck.
Crews spent hours taking down walkway railings and piling up sand and wood planks to remove the semi truck from the boardwalk. Some of the boardwalk had to be completely dismantled and rebuilt in the process.
The truck driver, whose name has not yet been released, claims that he was simply following the directions on his GPS when he entered the boardwalk. It is not clear where he was heading.
The boardwalk was closed for approximately 3 hours as the cab and trailer were removed separately.
“It is something that I haven’t seen in my 31 years,” said Ventnor City Police Chief Doug Biagi.
“We have seen vehicles up there. We have seen vehicles crashed up there. I have never seen an 18-wheeler…” Biagi added.
Police say the driver will likely be charged with multiple moving violations.
