Police say a tractor trailer failed to slow down in a construction zone, rear-ending and landing on top of a wrecker that was hauling a disabled semi.

The accident happened on Wednesday, November 29th at approximately 9:15 p.m. in San Antonio, Texas.

According to KSAT, a wrecker hauling a semi tractor was traveling along Interstate 35 near Somerset Road when it slowed down in a construction zone. A tractor trailer traveling behind the tow truck failed to notice the slowdown and crashed into the back of it, nearly driving over the tow truck before coming to a stop on top of it.

“Apparently, this heavy duty tow truck was slowing down for a work convoy, when a driver of a semi towing a trailer rear-ended this heavy duty tow truck, thus practically landing on top of the cab,” explained Officer Carlos Ortiz of the San Antonio Police Department.

A passenger in the tow truck was pronounced dead at the scene. The drivers of both the semi truck and the tow truck were taken to nearby hospitals. They are in stable condition, but witnesses say that the driver of the tow truck sustained “serious looking head injuries.”

“He had a lot of blood,” said witness Jackie Cooremans.

San Antonio Police Department Sgt. Arthur Lindley says that the tractor trailer was traveling at the 70 mph. speed limit at the time of the accident.

“My understanding is the tow truck was going slower,” Lindley explained.

“He [the truck driver] ran right over the top of it, couldn’t stop.”

I-35 was shut down at Somerset Road for 9 hours as crews worked to clear the wreckage. The lanes were reopened by Thursday morning.
