A trucker was killed after a sedan clipped a semi truck, leading to a two-truck crash on Interstate 580 this morning.

It happened on Thursday, September 14th at approximately 4:15 a.m. in Castro Valley, California.

According to SF Gate, a black sedan was weaving through traffic on westbound I-580 when it clipped the front of the first semi truck. The impact disabled the truck driver’s steering and the trucker brought the rig to a stop in the 3rd lane on the right, hazard lights on.

Around 5 minutes later, a second semi truck, who apparently did not notice that the first rig was stopped, slammed into the back of the parked rig. The driver of the second big rig was killed on impact.

The two other drivers were taken to a nearby hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

“It’s a pretty horrific scene,” said California Highway Patrol spokesman Tyler Hahn.

All westbound lanes of I-580 were shut down until around 9 a.m. when officials opened up one lane.

Crews are still working to clean the scene as one of the semi trucks was hauling a full load, and must be unloaded before it can be moved, reported KTVU.

As of 10 a.m., all westbound lanes are expected to reopen around noon. Drivers are still urged to avoid the area using the Foothill exit to Dublin Canyon Road, as traffic was backed up for four miles at one point.

Update (1:02 p.m.): The roadway has reopened.
