A portion of the 5 Freeway in California was shut down on Tuesday after a big rig went over a guardrail and fell off an overpass, crashing to the roadway below.

The accident happened on January 9th at approximately 10 a.m. in the San Fernando Valley area in Los Angeles, California.

According to NBC Los Angeles, the semi truck was traveling along the elevated 5 Freeway, Highway 118 westbound interchange when, for unknown reasons, it lost control, sending the rig over the concrete barrier wall and crashing to the lanes below.

The driver was taken to a nearby hospital, but his condition is not known, and his identity has not yet been released. No other injuries were reported.

As of 1:00 p.m., the northbound 5 Freeway to the westbound 118 was closed, including the Paxton on ramp. The westbound 118 to the northbound 5 has also been closed.

The roadways are expected to remain closed for an extended period of time.
