Police say a truck driver drove for seven miles before realizing he lost his second trailer in the middle of the Borman Expressway.
It happened on Tuesday, August 30th, in Gary, Indiana.
According to NBC Chicago, a 2015 Freightliner semi truck pulling double trailers was traveling east on Interstate 80/94 west of Grant Street when it was sideswiped by another tractor trailer. The impact tore off the Freightliner’s side mirror and caused the truck to swerve to the right, driving onto the shoulder of the highway. The Freightliner then over-corrected as it attempted to return to the right lane, causing the rear trailer to fishtail.
The trailer then came loose from the truck, rolled onto its side and landed in the middle and right lanes of the highway.
The driver apparently did not realize that the trailer had come unattached and continued driving to the entrance of the Indiana Tollway, nearly 7 miles away.
Once stopped at the entrance of the tollway, the driver realized that the rear trailer had gotten loose, and called local authorities.
The trailer was loaded with Amazon packages, none of which were lost in the accident.
The tractor trailer responsible for sideswiping the Freightliner was not found.
Several lanes of the Interstate were shut down for hours as the crews worked to remove the trailer from the road.
