Police say a tractor trailer slammed into stopped traffic, leading to a large pileup involving at least 22 vehicles.

The accident happened on September 4th in Nassau County, Florida.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, on Monday evening, a two-car accident caused a traffic backup on I-95 south near Yulee.

At approximately 10:45 p.m., a tractor trailer was unable to brake in time to avoid traffic and crashed into the line of stopped vehicles, reported Action News Jax.

22 vehicles, including three tractor trailers, were involved in the accident.

The incident killed one motorist and injured 13.

The truck driver was not injured in the incident and is currently cooperating with the police investigation.

“At this time, we don’t think alcohol or controlled substance was a factor,” said Sgt. Bryan Dylan

“But we want to make sure we cover all of our bases [such as] driver distraction or fatigue,” said Dylan.

The southbound lanes of I-95 were closed until approximately 7 a.m. on Tuesday morning.

The identity of the truck driver, as well the identity of the person killed, have not yet been released.
