An investigation into the shooting at a Kentucky truck stop on Tuesday morning has revealed that the incident was sparked due to an argument at the fuel pumps.
On Tuesday, November 7th at the Pilot Travel Center in Walton, Kentucky, a truck driver shot another trucker in the arm before shooting himself in the head. At the time, it was unclear what caused the outbreak of violence, but upon further investigation, the motive has been revealed.
According to the Boone County Sheriff’s Office, 44-year-old truck driver Ronald Melvin Jr. was cut off by 60-year-old truck driver Jeffrey Maggard as the two waited in line for fuel. Melvin then exited his rig and approached Maggard to confront him about cutting in line.
Witnesses say that Melvin then told Maggard to “have some consideration, there’s no place to park and we all got to get out of here,” and that’s when Maggard drew the gun, reported WLWT.
Maggard then shot at Melvin at least twice before looking around and shooting himself in the head.
Melvin can be seen walking towards the security camera, holding the arm where he was shot.
The Boone County Sheriff’s Office described the events of the video as follows:
Truck Stop video shows the victim, driving a semi-truck, pull up to one of a long line of fuel pumps and as he gets out of his truck another semi pulls up slightly ahead of the victim’s truck two spaces down. The victim walks to the front of his truck and then over toward the other truck. Within seconds the victim runs for cover (supposedly just after being shot). On-scene witnesses heard words between the two men and then shots rang out. After shooting the victim, the perpetrator turned the gun on himself and committed suicide.
Maggard died on scene, but Melvin was taken to a nearby hospital with injuries that were not believed to be life threatening. His current condition is not known.
