Police say a semi truck travelling too fast on snowy roads led to a multi vehicle crash involving a patrol car in Utah recently.

The accident occurred at around 11:00 p.m. on Thursday, March 15th, but the information regarding the incident was not released until late Sunday evening.

According to Fox 13 Salt Lake City, trooper Daniel Nielson was dispatched to Interstate 15 near mile marker 73 to assist with several cars rolled over in snowstorm conditions when he noticed an oncoming semi truck begin to slide across the roadway. The semi truck then slid into a tow truck assisting a wrecked driver before striking the patrol car and pinning it against another tow truck.

Luckily, there were no injuries sustained in the incident.

“He [the truck driver] said he was doing about 70 mph, which is about what his truck will do in that area,” said Nielson.

“As he got closer and he saw my lights in front of the tow truck, so that’s when he started to slow down, and that’s when he lost control with his brakes on the ice… On that highway that night, 45 mph would have been plenty fast,” Nielsen added.

The truck drivers name has not been released and it is not yet clear what citations, if any, have been issued.
