A car’s attempt to pass a semi hauling an oversize load led to a serious crash involving a school bus that left 16 people injured.

It happened in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania on Route 30 at around 7:50 a.m. on Wednesday, May 17th.

According to 6 ABC, an oversized truck and its escort were traveling east on Route 30 when a male in a light-colored sedan drove alongside the convoy in the median, attempting to pass.

The sedan tried to merge between the truck and the escort but hit the tail end of the escort vehicle.

The escort vehicle was then forced into the other lane, hitting the front of an oncoming school bus heading west.

The school bus then spun around and hit the semi truck before rolling onto its side.

The male in the sedan then drove away, making the incident a hit and run.

16 people were taken to the Lancaster General Hospital – the driver of the school bus and 15 students. There were 20 students in total on board the bus.

“There’s a very good possibility that this vehicle, as it was traveling eastbound prior to the accident scene, may have been passing other vehicles,” said John Bowman, police Chief for the nearby East Lampeter Township.

Officials are currently searching for the suspect, however details about the vehicle, or its driver, are scarce. The only information released is that it was a “newer model white-colored sedan” that most likely has front bumper damage.
