A pickup was crushed beneath an overturned tanker truck on Thursday after the pickup left its lane and struck the big rig head on.

The accident happened on November 9th at approximately 4 p.m. in Fairhaven, Massachusetts.

Massachusetts State Police say that the pickup was traveling east on Interstate 195 near exit 19 when it left its lane and crossed the median into oncoming traffic, colliding head on with a tractor trailer pulling a septic tank on the westbound side.

The force of the impact caused the tanker truck to overturn, landing on top of the pickup and crushing it beneath the trailer, spilling septic waste along the highway, reported 7 News Boston.

The pickup driver was airlifted to a nearby hospital, while the trucker was taken by ambulance. Both drivers suffered serious injuries but are expected to make a full recovery.

Traffic was diverted from the westbound lanes of I-195 to Route 240 through the evening as crews sprayed foam to clean up the sewage and cleared the debris from the roadway.

The lanes have since been reopened.
