The Owner-Operator Independent Drivers Association (OOIDA) is continuing their fight against the proposed commercial vehicle speed-limiter mandate with a comprehensive fact sheet and video, explaining why the mandate is a horrible idea.
The speed limiter mandate was officially proposed in September 2016 and supported by the American Trucking Association, The Trucking Alliance, and several large trucking companies. Although President Donald Trump’s stance on regulations appears to have temporarily put the brakes on the proposal, large carriers such as Swift Transportation have continued to express their support for the mandate.
The fact sheet and video released by the OOIDA on Monday argues that a speed limiter mandate would increase traffic and make the roads more dangerous for not only truckers, but also the general motoring public.
“Traffic is safest when vehicles all travel at the same relative speed,” the OOIDA points out.
The video also includes a short interview with Dr. Steven Johnson, a researcher that has conducted extensive studies on highways and speed.
The clip ends with one of the simplest, and best points — that trucks are already equipped with the best “speed limiter” known to man: the professional driver’s foot.
