Police are warning drivers to be extra cautious following a series of unprovoked attacks on a North Carolina highway that sent a trucker to the hospital and damaged several vehicles.

The attacks began on Wednesday, October 25th on NC Highway 111, and have continued through Tuesday, October 31st.

According to the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office, the series of attacks have involved objects being thrown from a moving vehicle into lanes of oncoming traffic. The attacks have occurred along the NC HWY 111, south of Goldsboro, from Dollardtown Road to Indian Springs Road.

The first attacks happened on Wednesday, October 25th between 12:30 a.m. and 1:30 a.m. on NC HWY 111 Southbound. On that night, three vehicles driving south on HWY 111 were struck with objects thrown from a car. One of the victim’s cars was struck twice by an object thrown from what she described as a white car being followed by a pickup truck.

Then on Thursday, October 26th, between 11:00 p.m. and 11:30 p.m., three more drivers were attacked with objects thrown from a moving car. One of the victims believed a red car “swerving in the opposite lane” threw something at her vehicle, while the other two victims described the objects being thrown from a white pickup truck with a loud exhaust.

On Tuesday, October 31st, the most serious of the attacks occurred. At approximately 2:50 a.m., a truck driver reported that the occupants of a dark-colored passenger vehicle had thrown an object at his truck and had broken his passenger side window. The trucker was sent to the hospital with cuts on his face and glass in his eyes.

The Wayne County Sheriff’s Office urges anyone who becomes a victim of this crime to immediately call 911 so that officers may try to locate the suspect vehicle.

Anyone with information regarding the recent attacks is asked to call lead detective Lt. Tom Flores at (919)-731-1487, or to contact the Crime Stoppers Tip Line at (919)-735-2255.
