Nearly 60 undocumented immigrants were discovered inside a tractor trailer by Border Patrol agents in Texas over the weekend.
The immigrants were discovered at the Border Patrol Checkpoint in Laredo, Texas off of Interstate 35.
According to KRISTV News, the semi truck was in the main inspection lane at the checkpoint when agents began questioning the truck driver and his passenger about their immigration status. K9 agents then alerted to a suspicious scent inside the tractor trailer, so the rig was directed to a secondary checkpoint area.
The agents then inspected the big rig and discovered 59 undocumented immigrants from Mexico, Guatemala, Brazil, Peru, and Honduras inside the trailer. All immigrants were found in good health.
The truck driver and his passenger, who were legal citizens of the United States, were then arrested and their semi truck, seized.
“These criminal organizations view these individuals as mere commodities without regard for their safety,” said Laredo Sector Assistant Chief Patrol Agent Gabriel Acosta.
“The blatant disregard for human life will not be tolerated. We will continue to work with our law enforcement partners to disrupt and dismantle these organizations and prosecute those responsible.”
