A motorist told police he “wasn’t paying attention” to the road after plowing into the back of a semi truck at a traffic light on Thursday morning.
The accident occurred south of Fresno, California on Highway 41 at approximately 3 a.m. on October 26th.
California Highway Patrol says that the semi truck was stopped at a red light when the BMW approached it from behind. The light then turned green and the semi truck began to accelerate. The semi truck was still traveling at low speeds of approximately 15 mph, when suddenly, it was stuck from behind by the BMW.
According to ABC 30, the BMW was traveling at approximately 65 mph when the impact occurred.
The force of the impact crushed the front of the sedan, sending the motorist to a nearby hospital with non life-threatening injuries.
The truck driver was not hurt in the incident.
The motorist later admitted to troopers that he was driving distracted.
“Anytime you look away and are coming up on a slow moving vehicle there’s a chance, the chance of being in a collision is great,” said California Highway Patrol Sergeant Manuel Peregrina
“So you’ve always got to pay attention,” Peregrina continued.
The identities of the drivers have not been released. It is not clear what charges, if any, the motorist faces.
