The Minnesota Department of Transportation released a video of a tractor trailer knocking out 47 lights along a tunnel where large trucks have recently been banned.
It happened on July 28th at approximately 6:30 a.m. in the Lowry Hill Tunnel in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
According to the Star Tribune, the tractor trailer was traveling west on Interstate 94 when it entered the Lowry Hill Tunnel in the right lane, nearest to the wall.
As the truck drove along the curve in the tunnel, it grated against the light fixtures on the wall, busting the glass of 47 lights and sending metal pieces into the roadway.
Nearby construction workers had to temporarily stop traffic following the accident in order to remove metal debris from the road.
Police were called to the scene around 6:57 a.m. but they have been unable to find the driver.
“We really need trucks to say out,” MnDOT spokesman David Aeikens said. “We think some are in there deliberately. We need folks [in tractor trailers] to stay out of there,” he added.
Back in June, MnDOT banned vehicles that weigh over 9,000 pounds from using the tunnel due to a construction project. The project has temporarily narrowed the lanes in the tunnel from 12 feet to 10 feet, and is set to be completed in September.
The Minnesota State Patrol said they are currently searching for the driver of the truck, who did not stop at the scene.
“If we figure out who did it, we will send them a bill,” added Aeikens.
