The truck is capable of driving on autopilot at up to speeds of 55 miles per hour. Cameras and sensors alert the on-board computers, which operate the lane-keep assist, and automatic braking systems; potentially eliminating human error.

Mercedes also claims the trucks will benefit from increased fuel efficiency by scanning road topography and adjusting the drive train based on conditions.

Although the truck can drive itself, it’s not designed to eliminate truck drivers however. The company expects truck driver’s roles to shift. A Mercedes spokesperson had this to say on drivers new roles:

“…it will be possible for truckers to advance to new positions as transport managers, making truck driving a more attractive profession. Autonomous driving could thus help to resolve the shortage of truck drivers.”
