A man who stole a tractor trailer from a construction site, and later crashed it on a nearby highway, will not face any jail time after accepting a plea deal.
The incident happened in July 2016, when Issac T. Cruz stole a 2016 Freightliner, loaded with steel beams, from a construction site on the John Greenleaf Whittier Bridge in Amesbury, Massachusetts.
Cruz then drove the tractor trailer down Route 128 where he crashed it at approximately 1:20 a.m.
The crash dislodged a 50,000-pound steel beam from the tractor trailer, throwing it onto the highway.
As police were responding to the crash, Cruz was found walking along Route 128 wearing only shorts and black rubber boots. He matched the description of the man fleeing the crash scene and was arrested on site.
A driver for the company admitted to having left the keys inside the truck underneath a bottle of Gatorade that weekend.
The driver also said that the truck was ransacked for other goods and that a pair of black rubber boots were stolen.
Last month, Cruz pleaded guilty to receiving a stolen motor vehicle and receiving stolen property, and was ordered to pay $5,000 in restitution.
Cruz will on probation for the three years, and will be randomly screened for drugs and alcohol.
As part of the deal, Cruz will pay $65 a month for a year and a half, and $50 a month until the remaining balance is paid off, the Newburyport News reported.
The trucking company’s insurance is expected to cover the remainder of the damages, leaving the possibility for a civil suit against Cruz, open.
