Forever Vice President Joe Biden, sometimes referred to as “crazy Uncle Joe” due to his numerous public gaffs, wrote an interesting piece on the trucking industry for The Milwaukee Journal back in 1973.
Why does this matter? Well, it matters because back then, Senator Biden, decided to ride with a trucker to get the real scoop on the problems facing the industry. In 1973 we had a fuel crunch in this country, and truckers were suffering.
In his article, he wrote about his experience meeting 300 truckers and riding along side a driver for a night.
Biden said that the truckers he met with felt like the government wasn’t listening to them and was handing them a “snow job”. Sound familiar?
Truckers believed the proposed 50 mph speed limit back then was unfair because they couldn’t get into high gear at that speed, and it wasted fuel. They were also concerned about the proposed increase in freight rates. After listening to their complaints he seemed to agree that the government’s grip on the industry was inflicting unintended, negative consequences.
These days, drivers are faced with new and sometimes confusing regulations that many are not in favor of, seemingly on a regular basis, but there’s not a peep from our VP. Which raises the question, has Uncle Joe forgotten his experience?
