A crash involving a tour bus, a semi truck, and two other vehicles left 24 people injured in New Mexico early on Sunday.

The pile-up crash happened at around 2:00 a.m. on July 15th just north of Bernalillo, New Mexico.

According to CBS News, initially, a car struck a pickup truck along northbound Interstate 25, disabling both vehicles and blocking a portion of the roadway. The oncoming tour bus driver then swerved to avoid the disabled vehicles in the road but was unable to avoid them and struck the wreck from behind, ejecting one of the motorists inside the vehicles and overturning the bus, trapping 35 people. The overturned bus was then sideswiped by an oncoming tractor trailer that was unable to avoid the wreckage.

The jaws of life had to be used on the bus to free the 35 people trapped inside. 27 of the 38 people involved were injured in the crash, 3 of them in critical condition. Luckily though, six of the injured people suffered only minor injuries, and were able to be treated and released.

Three people were also killed in the crash. One of the deceased was a passenger in the car that initially struck the pickup, but details regarding the remaining two deceased have not been released.

“This is definitely one of the worst accidents I’ve seen in my career. A lot of agencies involved, a lot of patents, a lot of critical patients,” said Sandoval County Fire Chief James Maxon.

Interstate 25 was shut down in both directions for over 11 hours, but the wreckage has since been cleared and the roadway, reopened.
