A truck driver veered off road and into oncoming traffic after looking down at his GPS in Indiana Wednesday, causing a serious crash.
The accident happened on July 25th at around 5:00 a.m. in LaPorte County, Indiana.
Police say that a trucker was traveling south on Highway 421 at mile marker 39 near the Michigan City exit when looked down at his GPS. As he did so, the semi truck veered off road, down an embankment and onto Interstate 80/90, driving into traffic and striking a pickup truck hauling a trailer.
Luckily, only non-life-threatening injuries were suffered in the collision, reported WNDU News.
“What I did was I stopped my car right at the scene and got out, and me and a foreign truck driver opened the passenger door of the F-150,” said witness David Faulkner.
“There was a guy in there alive. So, what we did was, he was in pain, so we had to pull him over the console and the cab was smashed together and so we had to squeeze him out of there. And his ankle was flapping around – he broke his ankle severely.”
The injuries sustained by the truck driver in the accident are not clear, but he is expected to make a full recovery.
Oil and diesel fuel was spilled in the crash forcing the closure of all westbound lanes of I-80/90 in the area as crews worked to clean up the spill and clear the wreckage. Traffic was diverted at the LaPorte exit.
All lanes were reopened at about 8:00 a.m. that morning.
