In response to declining truck sales, Freightliner announced that it will lay off around 800 workers in Gaston County, North Carolina, as part of an apparent international reduction in workforce.
Freightliner stated that as on June 24, the company will let go of 200 workers at a parts and logistics plant in the Gastonia facility.
According to MSN, David Giroux with Freightliner’s parent company, Daimler Trucks North America told media that about 600 workers will be laid off at the Mount Holly facility. There are currently about 1,450 employees at the Mount Holly plant.
Giroux claims that the layoffs will be temporary.
The company says that they decided to cut jobs because of an expected a 15 percent drop in sales of medium to heavy duty trucks.
TWC News reported that the company had previously announced more than 2,000 layoffs in plants in Mount Holly and Cleveland.
Mount Holly City Manager Danny Jackson said he was disappointed about the decision.
The vice president of the Mount Holly chapter of the United Autoworkers union failed to comment on the situation about the layoffs.
