3 African elephants stood on the side of I-24 in Tennessee on Monday morning as fire fighters worked to put out the flames overtaking the trailer that hauled them.

The fire broke out at approximately 2 a.m. near Chattanooga, by the Georgia-Tennessee state line.

According to News Channel 9, a tractor trailer hauling 3 female African elephants was traveling on I-24 when the tractor caught fire. The truck driver quickly pulled over and called emergency crews.

The Chattanooga Fire Department said “the owners got the elephants safely out of the trailer and gave them some hay to munch on while firefighters put the fire out.”

The wreck has since been cleared.

“They were huge but well behaved” added Fire Chief Morgan.

The 3 elephants and their owners were on their way from Wilstern Ranch in Indiana to Sarasota, Florida for the winter and are currently back on their way to the sunshine state.
